This plant with large flowers, painted in bright colors, is successfully used in garden decor in different ways - both in the form of plantings of one or more varieties, and with other flowers. It is often called gazania, or African daisy, because it comes from Africa and looks like a daisy. In the wild it is a perennial, but in our latitudes in the country it is always grown as an annual.

Gatzany in landscape design

These beautiful flowers are used in the design of the garden due to their beautiful flowers, which are large and have a bright color against a contrasting background (raspberry on white, mustard on yellow, as well as orange, scarlet and snow-white shades).

Options for using a flower in a garden decor

Since African daisies have such a different color and texture of flowers and leaves, there are an infinite number of directions for their use to decorate the garden. Here are just a few of the ideas that can be adopted:

  1. Since all the bushes are small in height, it is appropriate to use them for decorating paths and borders between different parts of the garden (creating borders).
  2. African daisies add exotic colors to rockeries, flower beds - you can plant both different varieties with each other, and in combination with other undersized flowers.
  3. Using gatzany, you can create beautiful patterns if you alternate them with plants that have lush greens of interesting shades (for example, with cenereria). They are planted in alternation with each other in the form of a specific pattern (zigzags, circles, waves, or even in the form of butterflies).
  4. Since many African daisies are soil protectors, with their help you can successfully master the free spaces of the garden with ugly blackened earth.

Rules for combining with other plants

Since almost all varieties do not grow more than 25 cm in height, it is inappropriate to plant gatsaniya with tall plants. Another reason is that they can create a shadow to which the African daisy is quite painful. The best option is to create floral arrangements with plants of the same tier (cineraria, hosts, etc.).

Perennial and annual varieties and types of gatsaniya

African chamomile has quite a few varieties, and some varieties have been bred by breeders during hybridization. They have especially beautiful flowers with bright colors and expressive designs.

Gatzania harsh (shiny)

Gatzania harsh differs in a variety of colors - bright yellow, orange, saturated red and even brown. A characteristic feature is that they bloom very quickly at the beginning of the day and close just as quickly when evening comes.

The plant survives well in sunny placestherefore it is better not to grow it even in partial shade. Requires timely watering and top dressing; Soil drainage is also of great importance. This variety is propagated using seeds and cuttings. Moreover, after planting in open ground, it blooms within the warm season - after 2-3 months.

Gatsaniya hybrid

In height, this bush can grow by only 20-25 cm, while it is convenient to use it in the decor not only due to the bright colors with orange elongated petals, but also due to the peculiarities of greenery - the front side of the leaves has saturated dark green tones, while reverse - gray with silver shades.

Gatsaniya hybrid likes typical growing conditions for this variety - sunny, open places, top dressing with organic fertilizers and regular watering, especially in the dry season. Due to its height and strong roots, it is highly resistant to strong winds, so it can be kept in the summer even on the balcony.

Gatsaniya longshot

The name of the variety appeared due to the unusual shape of the petals, which are very elongated and have a small thickness. A characteristic feature of the coloring is a contrasting pattern of dark orange on a yellow background. as well as snow-white petals, like a large chamomile.

Flowers grow solitary, mainly in mid-August. They reach a diameter of about 7-8 cm. The bush is low - within 20 cm, so most often they are grown next to stunted plants or as a decoration for borders, rockeries and small flower beds.

Gatzania Peacock

The variety was named due to the unusual shape of the leaves. - they are very narrow and reach 20 cm in length. From the wrong side they are covered with a small layer of a white gun, rather rigid hairs are formed on the front side. The flowers grow in typical sizes, in the center they have a black ring, against which bright orange petals contrast successfully.

Gatsania Pottsi

A characteristic feature of this variety is quite large flowers, reaching a diameter of 11-12 cm. The color of the flowers is in many ways similar to the brilliant gatsaniya. Bushes of typical sizes - no more than 25 cm.

Gatzania linear

Gatzania linear has rather unusual carved leaves with pubescence on the underside. The flowers grow quite large, yellow-orange tones with various patterns and contrasting elements.

A distinctive feature of the variety is resistance to drought and frost, so that the seeds can be grown in open ground already in early April. The plant prefers the soil soft, moist and well-loosened.

Gatsania Talent

The variety has not only beautiful flowers painted in coral, yellow, orange, white shades, but also the original greenery, which looks like it is slightly snowy. The silver shade of the stems and leaves creates a good contrast, on which large flowers stand out successfully.

Flowers of this variety, unlike many others, are able to open even in cloudy weather, and sometimes at night.

Gatzania Triad

Representatives of this variety in height grow slightly higher than their counterparts - up to 30 cm. Their flowers have a great resemblance to ordinary chamomile. She loves to bloom only if there is enough sunlight. The care of the triad is demanding - it does not tolerate drying out and requires regular fertilizing.

The flowers have bright shades (orange, yellow, brown, copper-red) and grow quite large sizes. Against the background of gray-green foliage, they look very harmonious.

Gatsania Daybrek

The variety has unique patterns on flowers - stripes of saturated orange-brown shades on a snow-white or bright yellow background, grow up to 7-8 cm in diameter. The bush has typical sizes (20-25 cm) and blooms throughout the summer.

A characteristic feature of gatsaniya Daybrek is its strong resistance to dry conditions, undemanding to the composition of soils. The plant does not tolerate waterlogging, so watering is very rare. The bush grows quite widely around, so when planting in the garden you should maintain an interval of at least 15 cm. Seedlings grow very quickly at a temperature of at least 15aboutFROM.

Gatzania Sunlight

The variety received such an attractive name due to its bright colors of orange, yellow and red shades, which love to blossom only in sunny weather. In the center of the flower are beautiful rings of dark color, which emphasize bright petals.

The bushes grow low, but prefer to give long shoots in width, so they are also placed with a minimum interval of 15-20 cm. Particularly in need of watering during the period of active growth (first month).

Gatsania Kiss

Gatsaniya Kiss is a bush with almost the same dimensions in width and height (20-20 cm). The flowers are typical, 7-8 cm, with different bright shades (white, yellow, coral). The leaves have an interesting silver hue, emphasizing the rich colors of the petals.

They grow well in hot weather, open only on sunny days. Since this variety likes to grow in width, when growing at home, pots need to be chosen with a minimum diameter of 15 cm.

Gatzania Garden Star

Representatives of this variety are mainly grown at home. In the country, it is also often used, since the plant blooms from the beginning of summer until the first frosts appear. Flowers of bright colors with a dark border in the center. It is especially successful to use it in border plantings, as well as when filling unused, open areas - the variety is ground cover and successfully hides bare soil with its foliage.

Gatsaniya landing technology

Many African daisies bloom only after 3-4 months after sowing seeds, respectively, you need to plant them on seedlings based on the growing season.

Growing gatzania from seeds at home

Mostly seeds for seedlings are sown between February and April. Containers must contain openings of sufficient size so that there is no overmoistening of the soil.

The earth is well loosened, the seeds can be planted at a minimum distance of 3-4 cm and slightly pressed into the soil. Normally, the first shoots should appear in 2-3 weeks. The bottom of the pot is best drained with a 5-cm layer of sand with peat in equal proportions.

An important point: since all sowing work is carried out in winter, it is necessary to take care of good, constant lighting - you need lighting.

Important! African chamomile loves well-ventilated growing conditions - this is especially important at the seedling sprouting stage, therefore it is advisable to constantly ventilate the room for the first weeks, otherwise mold may start.

When and how to plant gatsaniya in open ground

When planting seedlings in open ground it is important to adhere to such rules:

  1. It is optimal to choose soil that is not acidified, better fertile and well loosened. If the soil is too poor, it is best to feed them immediately with mineral or complex fertilizers.
  2. Planting is carried out together with a lump of earth from a pot with seedlings, so as not to injure the plant.
  3. It is important to perform good drainage to avoid excessive moisture. For this, humus and sand are taken in equal proportions.
  4. The fundamental requirement of almost all varieties of gatzania is an open, sunny place (that is, even partial shade from garden trees is unacceptable).
  5. The optimal planting period is the end of April or beginning of May, when the soil is sufficiently warm, frosts are not expected, and daytime temperatures are steadily above 15aboutFROM.

Advice! If the soil is strongly acidified, then before planting, they should be treated with ash or slaked lime.

Features of gatzania care

In order to be able to properly grow such an African beauty in his country house or on the windowsill, it should be remembered that the plant comes from warm places in Africa and Australia. Accordingly, different varieties are united by a love of sunny places and warm climatic conditions.

Watering and feeding

African daisies love fairly moist soil, and at the same time, excessive moisture is unacceptable for them - in this case the flowers grow smaller than usual sizes, and their number decreases markedly. Mostly plentiful watering is required only at the first stage, when the first shoots appeared. Further, moisture must be supplied only after a long dry period, so as not to allow cracked soil under the bushes.

As for feeding, then gatsaniya is sensitive enough to fertilizers - organic, nitrogen and complex (the latter are used based on the calculation of 25-30 g per square meter). It is especially important to regularly feed before flowering plants.

Important! As a rule, various varieties of African chamomile prefer only fertile, well-loosened soils. If the composition of the soil is quite poor, then it makes sense to fertilize almost every 14-20 days, especially at the stage of active flower growth.

Protection against diseases and pests

Different varieties of gazania have sufficient resistance to diseases and pests, however, in order to preserve the plants from their negative effects, it is better to periodically treat the bushes with special solutions.

Most often, chamomile is threatened by:

  • aphid;
  • garden snails;
  • gray rot of the roots;
  • spider mite.

Insects love its greens, and micro-fungi parasitize on the roots. In the latter case, it is enough to spray the diseased bushes with a fungicide. In the fight against insects, conventional insecticidal solutions are used.

Features and timing of the collection of flower seeds

When the flowers bloom, the seeds of African chamomile ripen pretty quickly and crumble, so it is important to choose the right moment when they can be collected. To do this, it is advisable to monitor the flowers every day after they have fully opened and reached maximum sizes. As soon as the seeds begin to fall to the ground from a gust of wind or touch, the time has come.

Seeds must first be laid on a flat surface to dry them for several days. At the same stage, you can immediately select the largest ones, and then put them in a paper bag to save for the next year. The bag is signed with the grade, color and date of collection.

Important! If the seeds do not show off freely from the flower, then they have not ripened. You should not take them, because there is a big risk that they will not sprout - only mature seeds are subject to collection.
